Healthy and tasty treats for your dog

It’s time to pop on your chef hat and be the chef of your dog’s dreams! 

These recipes incorporate healthy ingredients that have benefits for your furkid! Remember to ensure that your ingredients are as natural as possible for maximum benefits, and leave out any foods that can be toxic to dogs. Keep your furry pal’s allergies (if any) in mind when checking out the ingredients, and if you’re not sure, do check with your vet first!

Going Nuts for Mint Chews

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour (whole wheat or non-bleached is best)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup non-fat plain Greek yogurt
  • A handful of mint leaves
  • Water (as needed)

Directions:

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius.
  2. Blend the mint leaves with some water.
  3. Combine all of the ingredients until a soft dough is formed. If the dough is dry, you can add a small amount of water. 
  4. Roll out the dough on some parchment paper and cut out using cookie cutters of your choice.
  5. Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake for about 15 – 18 minutes.
  6. Cool and serve! You can store these for later in an airtight plastic container.

Carrot and Banana Treats 

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 2 carrots (grated)
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup vegetable or olive oil
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
  2. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  3. Combine the dry ingredients in large mixing bowl.
  4. Mash ripe bananas in a small bowl. Add mashed banana, grated carrots, egg, water and oil with the dry ingredients.
  5. Mix until blended into a stiff dough.
  6. Roll out your dough to ½ inch thickness on a floured countertop, and use cookie cutters for desired shape, and place on cookie sheets.
  7. Bake treats for 35 minutes. Let cool on racks and store in air tight containers in fridge or freezer.

Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Bites

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 egg
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 2 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Water (as needed)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
  2. Whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl (You might need to add a little water) Tip: Using your hands might mix the ingredients more thoroughly.
  3. Roll the dough into a ball.
  4. Flour a hard surface and use a rolling pin to roll the dough out, which should be about 1/2 inch thick.
  5. Use a cookie cutter to make a cute shape.
  6. Bake in over for about 30 minutes, or until hard.

Sweet Potato Chips

Ingredients:

  • 1 Sweet Potato
  • 1 tablespoon melted Coconut Oil
  • Spices - Cinnamon

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 220 degrees Celsius.
  2. Wash and peel the sweet potato.
  3. Cut the sweet potato into evenly sized long skinny pieces.
  4. Coat with oil and spices, and then mix in a large bowl.
  5. Place fries on baking sheet in one layer.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes.
  7. Flip over fries so that the chips will be baked evenly,
  8. Bake for another 10-15 minutes.
  9. Let cool before giving to your furkid!

Other spices that are safe for dogs include: Basil, dill, and parsley.
